Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth itineraries commonly connect through Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu or another Asian hub before continuing to Urumqi or a regional Xinjiang airport. The shortest-looking itinerary is not always the safest if the domestic connection requires a terminal change or bag re-check.
Urumqi, Altay, Kashgar or Yining: choosing the arrival airport
Urumqi is the strongest gateway for combined routes and schedule recovery. Altay is appropriate for a compact Kanas snow programme. Kashgar works well for the Pamir and southern oases but has fewer rebooking options. Yining can reduce land time in Ili, subject to operating schedules and the full itinerary.
| Airport | Best used for | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Urumqi | Combined regions, first-time routing and easier rebooking options | Adds a city transfer or onward domestic flight for some mountain routes |
| Altay | Kanas, Hemu and a snow-focused northern itinerary | Fewer flights and greater winter weather exposure |
| Kashgar | The Pamir, Kashgar Old City and South Xinjiang | Smaller domestic network and limited recovery options |
| Yining | An itinerary that genuinely spends time in Ili | Not useful if the route immediately heads back north or south |
Season and holiday length
The December–January school break can align with Altay snow, although holiday demand and cold conditions must be planned around. June–July suits longer family journeys and broader road travel. Easter and shorter breaks work better for one region than for a rushed cross-Xinjiang circuit.
Australian school holidays and Chinese domestic holidays can overlap. Snow-season accommodation and larger vehicles should be secured early, especially around Christmas and the new year.
Which private Xinjiang route fits your group?
Australian families often value school-holiday timing and a manageable pace. Couples can use longer daylight in summer for photography or road journeys. Winter travellers should accept short daylight and the possibility that snow activities may change with weather and resort operations.

We can prepare an AUD quote for the agreed land programme. The written proposal identifies the exchange-rate basis and payment currency; changes in the exchange rate before confirmation should not be assumed to be absorbed.
No final amount is stated in this guide because hotel availability, vehicle category, room count, route and date materially change the cost. Send the travel month and group profile for a written scope.

How do Australian travellers usually reach Xinjiang?
Most journeys connect through an Asian or Chinese hub before a domestic flight to Urumqi, Altay, Kashgar or Yining. Direct route availability varies, so the Xinjiang itinerary is built around the actual confirmed international arrival time.
Can you issue an AUD quotation?
Yes. We can prepare an AUD quote for a specified Xinjiang land package. The exchange-rate basis, validity and payment terms are included in the written proposal.
Is December a good month for an Altay trip from Australia?
December can suit snow-focused travel and the Australian school break, but daylight is short and mountain activities are weather-dependent. Christmas and New Year demand may also affect hotel and vehicle availability.
Which route is best for a first Xinjiang tour?
A 5–7 day Altay route is focused for winter, while a 5–7 day South Xinjiang route works well for Kashgar and the Pamir in warmer months. Twin Lakes requires more days because it combines northern landscapes and Sayram Lake.
Can you help with domestic flights after an international ticket is booked?
Yes. Send the issued international schedule, baggage rules and arrival terminal. We can recommend a safe domestic connection and airport transfer plan, but airline schedule changes remain outside our control.
Can our agency book ground services only?
Yes. Travel agencies can request a land-only scope covering the specified Xinjiang hotels, vehicles, drivers, local guides, transfers and support. Domestic air, international flights and excluded services remain separate unless included in the written proposal.
