Xinjiang is large, and the best international flight into China is not always followed by the best domestic connection. Compare the whole journey: international arrival, terminal change, baggage, immigration, domestic flight or rail, and the first night of the land route.
Fly to Urumqi for the widest connections
Urumqi usually offers the broadest domestic network and the best recovery options if a schedule changes. It is the practical choice for a multi-region trip, a B2B inspection or a route that combines northern and southern Xinjiang.
Fly to Kashgar for the Pamir
Kashgar is the efficient gateway for Kashgar Old City, the China–Pakistan Highway and Tashkurgan. It can save a long transfer from Urumqi, but there may be fewer domestic alternatives if a flight is delayed or cancelled.
Fly to Altay for Kanas and Hemu
Altay is the focus airport for the northern snow route. It reduces land transfer time, but winter schedules, weather and road controls require a larger buffer. A slightly cheaper connection is not useful if it leaves too little time to reach the first hotel safely.
Fly to Yining for Ili
Yining can be useful when the itinerary spends meaningful time in Ili. It is less suitable if the route immediately returns north or south, because the airport choice no longer reduces total travel.
Domestic flights and rail
Domestic flights save long-distance time. Rail can work for selected city connections when station access and schedules fit. Compare baggage rules, station transfer time and whether the rail journey supports the pace of the group.
International connections and buffers
Airline schedules change. Avoid assuming that separate tickets will be protected or that bags will be through-checked. A safe plan includes realistic connection time, a terminal check and a contingency if the domestic flight is missed.
Visa and entry documents

What is the main airport for Xinjiang?
Urumqi generally has the widest domestic connection network. The best airport still depends on the destination: Altay for Kanas, Kashgar for the Pamir and Yining for Ili.
Can I book a separate domestic flight?
Yes, but the connection risk and baggage rules must be understood. Separate tickets may not be protected if an international flight is delayed.
Should I fly or take the train in Xinjiang?
Flights reduce long-distance travel time. Rail may suit selected city pairs when schedules, station access and baggage work for the group. The best choice depends on the itinerary.
How much connection time should I allow?
Allow enough time for immigration, baggage handling, terminal transfer and domestic check-in. The required buffer depends on the airport and whether the tickets are protected.
Can you arrange airport pickup?
Yes. Send the confirmed flight number, arrival terminal and guest count. Pickup and rest time can be included in the written land programme.
