Which airport should you fly into?
Urumqi is the main gateway for most Xinjiang itineraries. From there, travellers usually continue by domestic flight or rail to Altay or Kashgar depending on the route.
| Gateway | Useful for | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Urumqi (URC) | All major routes | Largest choice of domestic connections |
| Altay (AAT) | Altay, Kanas and Hemu | Confirm seasonal schedules and winter buffers |
| Kashgar (KHG) | Kashgar and the Pamir | Best fit for a South Xinjiang start |
We do not assume a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur. The practical route depends on the airline schedule, connection time and onward airport transfer.
How the connection affects the itinerary
A same-day connection can be efficient, but it leaves little room for airline delays. For winter travel, we normally recommend a clear buffer before the first mountain drive.
- Confirm the arrival airport before booking domestic transport.
- Allow time for baggage, terminal changes and airline re-checking.
- Avoid placing a long winter road transfer directly after a tight connection.
- Send us the proposed flights before paying for the land package.
Quick answers before you book
Is there a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Xinjiang?
Direct service changes by airline and season, so we do not assume one is available. We plan the Xinjiang land route around the confirmed connection.
Should I arrive in Urumqi or Altay for the winter tour?
Altay is convenient for the five, six and seven-day Altay routes. Urumqi may be used when it offers a better international or domestic connection.
How much connection time is needed?
It depends on the airport, terminal and whether baggage must be collected. We recommend confirming the exact flight combination before booking the land package.
Can you arrange airport pickup?
Yes. Pickup can be included or quoted once the arrival airport, flight number and arrival time are confirmed.
A realistic seven-day Altay route
| Day | Route | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Altay and transfer to hotel | Altay |
| 2 | G219, China–Kazakh Grand Canyon and Baihaba | Baihaba |
| 3 | Baihaba, Kanas Lake and scenic-area stay | Kanas |
| 4 | Kanas Three Bays and Hemu | Hemu |
| 5 | Hemu and Jikepulin winter activities when operating | Hemu |
| 6 | Hemu, General Mountain and return to Altay | Altay |
| 7 | Transfer for onward flight | — |
The order can change because of snow, road controls and scenic-area operations. Review the full seven-day itinerary for inclusions and hotel detail.
Recommended booking order
- Choose the route and number of nights.
- Confirm the realistic arrival airport and flight window.
- Approve the written land itinerary and quote.
- Book flights after the transfer and buffer have been checked.
- Reconfirm hotel, driver and activity arrangements before departure.
Snow and road controls can affect transfers. Keep the first and last days flexible and avoid returning to Malaysia immediately after a tightly connected domestic flight.
